Capsule Endoscopy Procedure
Our gastroenterologists are trained in all disciplines of gastroenterology with particular areas of specialist interest. We are privileged to have doctors trained in capsule Endoscopy with many years of experience, and at the leading edge of research and development within this exciting area.
Capsule Endoscopy is an advanced approach to investigating the entire length of the small intestines. A consultation with one of our experts can establish if you would be suitable for this procedure.
Nucleus healthcare is the only private gastroenterology unit providing this service outside London within the UK.
Capsule Endoscopy involves swallowing a small capsule the size of a large cod liver oil capsule, inside of which is a video camera. The patient is then free to leave the unit and go about their normal daily activities. The capsule passes easily and painlessly through the digestive tract within the next 24 hours.
During the first 8 hours around 57,000 colour pictures are stored onto a recorder, which has been attached to the patient underneath their clothes.
The patient is asked to return to Nucleus Healthcare to have the recorder removed, and the capsule is passed naturally.
