Anorectal Manometry

Anorectal Manometry is a test that measures how well the anal sphincter (back passage muscle) is working.

The test is carried out by a Specialist Nurse / Physiologist and takes approximately 1 hour. There is no preparation, it does not require sedation and is not painful.

You may be asked to have anorectal manometry to help your consultant to make a diagnosis. This may also be called a rectal motility test and is performed to measure the function of your muscles in the back passage.

Patients will only feel a sensation of pressure causing none or minimal discomfort as a number of measurements are recorded. The test takes a maximum of one hour to complete.

You will be able to resume normal activities after the examination. Your consultant will arrange an appointment for you to discuss the results.
