Gastric Balloon Treatment Diary

Wednesday 11th March
Can’t remember anything about the procedure....thank goodness for drugs!! Felt sick when I got out of bed and dressed. Just before I left I vomited, just wanted to get in the car and go home.

Had a sip of water and retired to bed with a bucket, a bottle of water and tissues. I slept and vomited for the rest of the day and night, it almost felt like a relief when I was sick. It’ll be worth it when I lose a bit of weight I’m sure.

Thursday 12th March
I didn’t even attempt to get out of bed today. Every time I moved and every sip of water I have had has made me vomit, they did say that the first few days are going to be rough.............they weren’t kidding!! I seem to be better on my left side and on my back, every time I lie on my right side it makes me worse. I have been prescribed anti sickness medication but as yet they have not stayed down, it’s the same with the Omeprazole. My throat is sore and there it feels like there is a lump at the back of it.

Friday 13th March
Attempted to get up this morning, it lasted 20 minutes then it was back to bed with my bucket. By the afternoon I was feeling quite sorry for myself and wondered if I had done the right thing...........was it going to be like this for the next 6 months?

Saturday 14th March
I decided it was time to get out of bed and pull myself together. I had a shower and did my hair, got dressed and felt the need to go out and do something. I went shopping with my husband, trudged up and down the aisle looking for inspiration, the trouble is when you feel nauseous there is nothing you want to eat. I was also experiencing heartburn like you wouldn’t believe; I’ve never had it before.....it’s really uncomfortable. The journey home couldn’t go fast enough, I was exhausted. Just made it home in time for projectile vomiting, the car journey and the shopping trip were, in hindsight a bit too much too soon. I spent the rest of the day doing nothing but watching television and reading. I thought I had better try and eat something for lunch to give me a bit of energy. Had a cup of soup, it stayed down....hooray!! For dinner I had a boiled egg and a slice of toast....lovely! When I have a drink it still hurts when I’m drinking.

Sunday 15th March
It was such a beautiful day I decided to take my dogs for a walk up in the woods. Thank goodness I have Bassett Hounds and not whippets, Melvin and Shirley are not the fastest creatures god put on this earth which was just as well as I had to keep stopping for a rest, I felt really weak. Had a roast dinner a bit of chicken half a roast potato and veg all served on a tea plate, so psychologically I’m still having a plate full. I think I’m going to go to work tomorrow; I want to get back to normal. The heartburn is still very uncomfortable but the Omeprazole should start to kick in soon.

Week 2
First day back in work, the first thing I did was weigh and I’ve lost 3.5kg......I’m thrilled, let’s hope it continues. Mid week I had a bit of nausea and did vomit twice, it seems to be the mornings which are the worst. Lying on my right side is still a bit uncomfortable but the heartburn has gone. I am belching rather more than usual. I’m going to see Wales v Ireland in the Millennium stadium on Saturday; we are going in early, have a bit of lunch and a few drinks. My usual drink is Malibu and coke but I am not allowed to have anything fizzy so I’ll have to re-think my tipple.

I could only manage two drinks, I was so full after that I would have been sick if I’d of had any more. It was a great day despite that.............who needs alcohol to enjoy themselves? I think I’ll become tea total!

Week 3
Another kg lost this week. Feeling good, everyone in work is commenting on my weight loss can’t see it myself yet, although the jeans are nowhere near as tight as they were. I keep forgetting to take my Omeprazole and subsequently I am belching for Britain. I’m a bit slack on the exercise; I am going to have to really make an effort.

Week 4
Another kg lost this week, it seems to be one a week, that’s two pounds a week............ I’m happy with that! On Friday I went to Ireland for the weekend with my husband my sister and her husband. We stayed with our Aunt and Uncle who just didn’t understand that I couldn’t eat lots of food. My uncle was up every morning and the frying pan was on for an Ulster fry. “I can’t eat all that” I told him....”that’s ok” he said “just have the one sausage”. It was a very boozy, food orientated weekend. The first night we went to a Chinese restaurant and I had the crispy duck starter for my main course and a couple of glasses of wine (naughty but nice!). The next night we went to my cousins and they had all made something for a dinner party. Lasagne, chicken curry and shepherd’s pie were all on the menu. I had a little bit of the lasagne and a little bit of curry and another couple of glasses of wine. Went back to my Uncles and was sick.... too much food. It’s hard to say no, I don’t want to ruin the weekend for anyone. Sunday we all went out for a three course carvery. I had a small bowl of soup and a chicken roast which was mostly veg. We went for a walk on the beach to help it all go down, but when I got home I was sick again. Not lots but enough to make me feel better. My husband had kept on to me all weekend that I was eating too much and of course he was right. Couldn’t wait to get home and get back to it.
