Anorectal Biofeedback and Bowel Dysfunction

Mike Holloway Anorectal Biofeedback & Bowel Dysfunction Anorectal biofeedback is now available at Nucleus Healthcare. Patients will initially have been seen by a consultant, who will refer them to the Bowel Dysfunction Clinic where you will be seen by a GI Physiologist or Nurse Specialist.

Biofeedback will normally consist of at least 4 sessions over a period of 4 – 8 weeks dependant on progress by the patient. (Further appointments can be made at the patient’s discretion).

At each session an evaluation of the progress will be made and a further plan will be discussed with the patient to enable them to achieve certain goals.

Biofeedback will not only concentrate on sphincter muscles, but may also take into account the patient’s diet, lifestyle, medications used and psychological well being.

A final report will be sent to the consultant on completion of the biofeedback session/s when the patient feels that they have achieved their goals in the management of bowel control for either constipation or faecal incontinence.

Follow up by phone will be made at 6 months to check on progress. Patients will be able to contact the Bowel Dysfunction Clinic to speak to a Physiologist or Nurse Specialist for advice or to arrange further biofeedback sessions if they feel the need.

Biofeedback is technique for conditioning or training the mind to control and regulate certain muscle functions. With biofeedback, the patient can learn to stop using the wrong muscles and start using the correct ones.

Biofeedback of the anal sphincter may be used to treat the following:

  • Faecal Incontinence.

There are many causes of faecal incontinence. If abnormalities are present, they can be treated. Biofeedback techniques using anal manometry and special exercises of the pelvic floor muscles can strengthen the muscles and improve sensation. This can help treat faecal incontinence. Biofeedback is pain free.
  • Constipation

There are many causes of constipation. Some involve sluggish movement through the whole colon, whereas others involve the anal sphincter muscles. This abnormal muscle function may cause a functional type of obstruction. Muscles that do not relax with bearing down can be retrained with biofeedback techniques.

Biofeedback can be evaluated by the use of anal manometry and special exercises of the pelvic floor to increase the ability of the patient to relax. This procedure is also pain free.
